The prototype

Quote-O-Matic is a mobile application prototype for flooring and curtain salespeople working in a customer’s home. It brings client details, room measurements, product choices, and the final quote into one room-by-room workflow instead of relying on paper notes and a delayed calculation back at the office.

What testing showed

Five participants completed the prototype tasks using a think-aloud protocol. The clearest problem appeared at the point where the work was supposed to pay off: three participants needed help to find the quote they had generated. A small cart icon did not communicate that the completed calculation lived behind it.

The sequence also worked against the way participants expected to measure a home. Automatic redirects pushed them towards choosing products after each measurement, while they preferred to finish measuring every room first.

Changes to the flow

The second design replaced the cart icon with a labelled “Summarise Quote” action and visible price feedback. Measurement and product selection became separate stages, allowing the salesperson to finish one kind of work before moving to the next. Product cards also gained visible actions instead of hiding them in kebab menus.

These changes respond directly to the first evaluation, but the revised flow was not tested again as part of the documented study. There is no follow-up completion rate for the revised design.
