Indigenous tourism concept · Culturally respectful design
Context
Concept prototype for an Indigenous tourism platform. Designed with cultural respect as the primary design constraint, not an afterthought.
Ethical design decisions
Dual-naming maps. Maps display both Indigenous place names and colonial names with equal prominence.
Community Verified cultural badges. Tourism experiences are endorsed by the relevant Indigenous community, not by the platform.
Elder authorization flows. Content about cultural sites requires sign-off from community Elders before publication.
Pronunciation audio
Integrated audio clips for Indigenous place names, recorded by community members. Implementation uses browser-native audio elements with visible, labeled controls.
Process
Research into Indigenous data sovereignty principles. Consulted cultural protocols for digital representation of Traditional Knowledge. Designed with the principle that Indigenous communities own and control their cultural data.
